About the NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji's Centenary year, 1969.

In May 1969, a conference of student representatives (of universities and institutions of higher education) convened by the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission also unanimously agreed that a National Service Scheme could be an instrument for national integration.

On 24 September 1969, the then Union Education Minister V.K.R.V. Rao launched the NSS at 37 universities in all states. The scheme has been extended to all states and universities in the country.

National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS, was launched in Gandhiji Centenary year, 1969 and aimed at developing student’s personality through community service. The overall objective of National Service Scheme is Educational. This objective is attained through the service to the community.

The symbol of NSS is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa.

MESSAGE

National service Scheme provides diversified opportunities to students in colleges and universities to develop their personality through community services. Community services rendered by University level students have covered several aspects like adoption of villages for intensive development work, mass tree plantation, technology transfer programmes, technologies for rural development, various training programmes for self-help groups and rural youth etc., Considering the benefits Anna University has made NSS Compulsory at UG level for the first two years.

I am happy to learn the activities carried out by the NSS volunteers in Engineering Colleges in Anna University on the theme HEALTHY YOUTH FOR HEALTHY INDIA, for pollution free environment, World no Tobacco Day (May 31), Blood Donation Camps, General Health Camps, Creation of awareness among the public on HIV/AIDS etc.

We congratulate all those involved in putting their might in moulding the budding Engineers, taking NSS an opportunity and also by conducting training programmes on various trades, venturing upon trekking and mountaineering Career Guidance Programmes and participating in the various seminars, etc., make one feel elated.

Like last year, this year shall be another year with vibrant NSS activities on the theme HEALTHY YOUTH FOR HEALTHY INDIA. The Hand Book suggest only a few activities to be carried out, there could be many more.

I am sure that the volunteers will work towards bringing up the name of their institutions and Anna University through the NSS activities.

Adoption of a village and area is a very meaningful programme in NSS. It is far better to concentrate attention on one village and take up the task for development perspective, than to fritter away energy in many locations involving too many activities which may not be completed at all or where the follow up action may not be possible.

From this point of view, village adoption programme should ensure continuity of work vis-a-vis sustained action, evaluation and follow up work.

OBJECTIVE

The overall objective of NSS is Personality Development through community service.

The broad objectives of NSS are to:

  • Understand the community in which they work
  • Understand themselves in relation to their community
  • Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process.
  • Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  • Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems
  • Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
  • Gain skills in mobilizing community participation
  • Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude
  • Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disaster and
  • Practice national integration and social harmony

Health, Family Welfare and Nutrition Programme

  • Programme of mass immunization;
  • Working with people in nutrition programmes with the help of Home Science and medical college students;
  • Provision of safe and clean drinking water;
  • Integrated child development programmes;
  • Health education, AIDS Awareness and preliminary health care.
  • Population education and family welfare programme;
  • Life style education centres and counseling centres.

Programmes aimed at creating an awareness for improvement of the status of women

They may, inter-alia, include:

  • Programmes of educating people and making them aware of women's rights both constitutional and legal;
  • Creating consciousness among women that they too contributed to economic and social well-being of the community;
  • Creating awareness among women that there is no occupation or vocation which is not open to them provided they acquire the requisite skills; and
  • Imparting training to women in sewing, embroidery, knitting and other skills wherever possible.
